Harbin Cultural CentreMAD studio
A building of supple lines designed by the MAD studio to blend into nature. The Harbin Cultural Centre, in Harbin (China) is composed of two volumes set like soft white hills on an island in the middle of the riverbed.
It has an Opera House (two theatres seating 1,600 and 400) in the main one and spaces for films, exhibitions and events in the second. As the forty-year-old founder of MAD, Ma Yansong, explains, “the entire complex has been laid out as an area at the disposal of the public, not just for concerts and shows but also as a place where people can meet, go for a picnic or stroll along paths that wind at different levels with views of the river and the city”.
